Interview with Lola Baraldi – MUTEK

Project Manager - Culture & Festivals

Unframed Collection is a partner of Numix Lab, a touring event in Europe that each year takes professionals and experts in immersive creation to meet the cultural centres of the host countries. In 2024, Germany welcomed 250 people, with an intense week of exchanges and discoveries between Munich, Leipzig and Berlin! To mark the occasion, we met with Lola Baraldi, in charge of partnerships, eco-responsibility, and digital strategy at the MUTEK festival.

Lola Baraldi – MUTEK is a festival and forum dedicated to digital creativity and electronic music. Founded in Montreal in 2000, it celebrated its 25th anniversary this summer and has expanded internationally, with branches in various parts of the world.

L. B. – We have just wrapped up our edition in Tokyo. This year, we also celebrated the 20th anniversary of the event in Mexico, the 15th anniversary in Barcelona, as well as other editions around the world.

L. B. – Our specialty is live performances. We showcase the many facets and richness of electronic music by leveraging new technologies. Our mission is to support artists as technological tools evolve and to provide them with a space for experimentation, allowing them to test concepts they might not be able to develop elsewhere.

A Landmark Project by MUTEK

L. B. – This summer, for our 25th anniversary, we launched a digital installations and exhibitions project called Le Village Numérique. It featured a series of 25 digital art installations set up in the heart of Montreal, in the Quartier des Spectacles. The event took place before, during, and after the festival, highlighting various creative studios as well as independent artists from Quebec, along with a touch of international programming.

L. B. – The goal of this project was to democratize access to digital art for the general public. The entire experience was free, featuring both outdoor and indoor installations.

Immersive Technologies and Electronic Music: A Winning Duo?

L. B. – When it comes to performances, we see technology as a tool for innovation. The idea is to offer a select audience unique and exclusive experiences while allowing artists to feel free to experiment. Whether through new technologies or alternative forms of instrumentation, our aim is to push the boundaries and limits of electronic music.

Expanding Your Network at Numix Lab

L. B. – We are also looking to expand our network of international programmers to promote Quebec and Canadian talent. MUTEK supports around twenty locally established artists each year who are ready for international exposure.

L. B. – In this regard, we want to invite a broader network of programmers to come and discover these performances. The artists benefit from a training program that includes pitch sessions and press kit development. Our goal is to create the ideal conditions to foster connections and encourage the export of audiovisual performances and Canadian and Quebec-based installations.
