Interview with Paolo Loeffler – Kunstkraftwerk Leipzig

Managing Director

Unframed Collection is a partner of Numix Lab, a touring event in Europe that each year takes professionals and experts in immersive creation to meet the cultural centres of the host countries. In 2024, Germany welcomed 250 people, with an intense week of exchanges and discoveries between Munich, Leipzig and Berlin! To mark the occasion, we met with Paolo Loeffler, Managing director of Kunstkraftwerk Leipzig.

Kunstkraftwerk Leipzig is Germany’s first museum for digital and multimedia art. A hotspot for creatives and art lovers of all ages with immersive exhibitions, digital installations and events.

Paolo Loeffler – I’m managing director here at Kunstkraftwerk Leipzig, an immersive art center opened since 2016 and based in Leipzig, Germany.

Presenting immersive works at Kunstkraftwerk Leipzig

P. L. – We showcase different immersive technologies and also formats. Like in terms of technologies, it’s mainly projection based. We have indoor projection based, immersive experiences, but we also integrate a lot of different technologies around our exhibitions such as VR, digital art installations, light and sound, interactive installations.

P. L. – In the past, for example, we presented “Dalì : Cybernetics” by Layers of Reality, which is a licensed, VR exhibition production. But before we’ve also showcased “Claude Monet – Master of Colors and Lights”, “Alice in Wonderland”, “Gustav Klimt: Gold Experience”, which are our own productions that we developed.

P. L. – We target a large and wide audience. Basically everyone, and we always try to integrate different topics that always attract a little spike of a different audience. So we have a lot of art lovers, of course, but we also drag on a lot of young people and older people. And for example, with “Alice”, we drag on a lot of families.

Exploring how to present VR

P. L. – Today everyone is sort of working on their own venue management model. And it totally makes sense to just collaborate more, and to bring topics or expertise together, co-produce or distribute more together. There is more collaboration internationally. This helps a lot. In terms of content production, we’re trying out a lot at the moment. The question is, how will it mature, what will be the default standards to go to the whole market, from this very creative phase. It becomes a bit more mature in that sense.

About the Numix Lab 2024

P. L. – We met a lot of very interesting people, and very diverse in the sense that it attracts so many players from different industries. It’s really focused on digital arts, that’s quite unique. I’m really happy that there’s this chance of having this international delegation coming together and spending a series of days, intense time all together and getting to know each other very well.
